Saturated with tears, emotions, and heavy moments, Ruler Master of the Mask was a rather depressing experience. You might question why I described it as “depressing,” but we will get into that later. If you want to experience a roller coaster ride of emotions and a flood of tears, this drama is perfect for you. But if you are seeking light-hearted feelings and heart fluttering moments, go to the toolbar and click that exit button already. The drama revolves around Crown Prince Lee Sun let’s call him Seja to prevent confusion and his quest to become the king of the whole nation. Seja is forced to wear a golden mask to protect his face from the Pyunsoo organization, a group of people determined to rule Joseon. Led by Daemok, they control people through their addictions to “poppy pills”. Whoever enters the powerful Pyunsoo group is bound to them after their ingesting the poppy pills and becoming addicted to them. They had to take the pills on a regular basis, and if they didn’t, they would die. Pyunsoo controlled the king and monopolized all the water in Joseon by establishing the “Bureau of Water” that made the people fall into hardships and suffering. Seja falls in love with the daughter of the Deputy Magistrate, a lady named Han Gaeun, but under a disguise. Gaeun knew him as Chunsoo, a bookkeeper, and not the crowned prince of the nation. Things get entangled as Pyunsoo pressures Seja into to killing the Deputy Magistrate and Gaeun watches Seja kill her father with her own eyes, planting a seed of hatred in her heart as she vows to take revenge. The plot of the drama was interesting and made it different from other sageuk dramas out there. However, I would point out that I only liked the story during the beginning, and as time passed, it got absurd and really terrible. The finale was satisfying but considering how the writers really forced the story it came across as too spontaneous and ridiculous, which lessened its worth. Crown Prince Lee Sun or Seja, was a hero, no doubt. His only goal was to help Joseon and its people. He was determined and was dedicated to becoming a king for the sake of the nation. He was selfless and was willing to risk anything to achieve the freedom he dreamed of for his country. At first, Seja was not allowed to leave the palace, however, due to his curiosity and enthusiasm, he escaped and tried to witness a life outside the luxury of being a prince. He put up the facade that he was a bookkeeper named Chunsoo, and fell in love with the daughter of the Deputy Magistrate, Han Gaeun. But because of Seja’s recklessness caused by being young and naive, the Deputy Magistrate faced a death that deeply scarred Gaeun and sowed the seeds of her hatred for Seja, not knowing that he was the man she holds endearingly, Chunsoo. The strong and the brave, Seja, was the King everyone deserved. Han Gaeun was a modest, naive, and innocent lady outside the palace. She helped the poor and was the go-to person for people who were sick or being ill. She was one of the few who was able to read and write in her town. Though she becomes deeply scarred as a result of her father’s death, she remains lovely and innocent. I can only summarize Gaeun as a “damsel in distress”. She is annoyingly a little useless and only causes trouble. Her rash and ignorant actions result in the occurrence of a lot of unfortunate events. She redeemed herself by the end however, though remains as a”damsel in distress” that only mattered because she is the main lead. Commoner Lee Sun was once innocent but became greedy and evil. Because of Seja’s recklessness and the King’s heartlessness, the once naive Lee Sun became a monster. He became the puppet king for Pyunsoo in place of Seja who was believed to have died. He endured all the hardships and kept his trust in Seja. However, because of his unrequited love for Gaeun, his hatred grows and he becomes the monster who blocked the eyes of the real Lee Sun. He meets a terrible end and it’s all because of Seja and Gaeun, whom he hated, but at the same time treasured. Kim Hwagun was no doubt the best character in this drama. I’m telling you, without Hwagun, this drama would have already ended by now. Her character was the bravest, the strongest, the fiercest, but at the same time, the poorest. All she wanted was to protect and to shield Seja, and by any means, she would do what’s best for him. With the description of the characters above, you already know what you’re signing up for. Everyone in the acting department was exceptional. Yoo Seungho and Kim Sohyun did not disappoint as usual. The delivery of their lines and expressions were all on point. Kim Myungsoo was also a pleasant surprise. In comparison to his acting before, he definitely improved so much! Unlike before, he is not awkward and can go head to head with Yoo Seungho and other veteran actors yet doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb. Yoon Sohee, despite the amazing heroine role, was a little bit of a let down at first. Her acting was raw and her expressions were funny. However, as the show progressed, she improved and without her magnificent skills, Hwagun wouldn’t be as badass. Ruler Master of the Mask may be a bit absurd in terms of plot and pacing, but I admit, it’s a guilty pleasure. I still waited for every episode every week to be able to answer the questions inside my head. The drama was intense and thrilling, ensuring that I looked forward to seeing its end. I considered dropping it, but in the final episodes it grew interesting and rebuilt my hype for its ending. Conclusion Ruler Master of the Mask was a half-terrible half-satisfying experience. I initially watched it because of L, but stayed because of Hwagun. Though I think it could have been better in every aspect, it still finished on a good note and a clean finale. I would NOT recommend this to you if you are a perfectionist because it has a frustrating number of spontaneity. However, if you can manage to overlook those, you will find it okay and plausible to finish.

Estou feliz por ter tantas opções de dramas de época e espero que 2017 continue assim. 🙂 Ruler Master of The Mask foi um drama que gostei muito, com uma história interessante e personagens cativantes, até os vilões. O elenco foi ótimo, e a produção do drama também, mas não posso considerá-lo um dos melhores sageuks da minha vida, porque no meio do drama percebi que a história saiu dos trilhos um pouco. No fim, gostei de pontos que não imaginava gostar e vou explicar tudo no post. Ruler Master of The Mask Episódios 40 Emissora MBC Ano 2017 Sinopse Nos anos 1700, o príncipe herdeiro Lee Sun luta contra Pyunsoohwe, uma organização que tem acumulado poder e riqueza através da privatização de água em toda Joseon. Ele se torna uma esperança para as pessoas que sofrem. Ga Eun é a mulher que o príncipe herdeiro Lee Sun ama e ela o ajuda a crescer como um governante. Estava ansiosa pelo drama por causa atores que gosto muito Yoo Seung Ho e Kim So Hyun. Nem tinha lido sinopse, mas logo que comecei achei a história principal muito interessante. O príncipe herdeiro, Lee Sun Yoo Seung Ho é obrigado a usar uma máscara desde seu nascimento, já que sua vida corre perigo por conta de questões políticas que envolvem seu pai. Lee Sun acaba descobrindo que o povo está sofrendo com a privatização da água em Joseon e indignado resolve fazer algo o que resulta em problemas ainda maiores. O rei é assassinado e o chefe da Pyunsoohwe se fortalece ainda mais. Pra piorar tudo, no meio dessa confusão o pai da amada de Lee Sun também é morto. Ela é Han Ga Eun Kim So Hyun e seu pai era um fiel súdito do rei. O príncipe herdeiro não tem escolha, e acaba deixando seu amigo que também chama Lee Sun L em sua posição de atual rei e se disfarça de um cidadão comum a fim de traçar um plano para acabar com o chefe da Pyunsoohwe. O problema é que o chefe da Pyunsoohwe, Dae Mok Heo Jun Ho tem uma “arma” secreta que é um veneno que torna as pessoas dependentes, como uma droga, se a pessoa não tomar o antídoto de certo em certo tempo acaba morrendo e ele usa esse veneno para controlar as pessoas que trabalham pra ele, incluindo o rei que foi morto e o atual rei. A príncipio, Dae Mok não sabe que Lee Sun que sentou no trono não é o verdadeiro príncipe herdeiro. A neta de Dae Mok é Kim Hwa Goon Yoon So Hee uma garota persistente e apaixonada pelo verdadeiro príncipe herdeiro. Expliquei rapidamente pra não dar muitos spoilers, omiti alguns fatos importantes da história, mas tudo isso que falei é dos primeiros episódios. 😉 Confuso? Sim, haha, mas assistindo dá pra entender bem todos os motivos dos personagens. Agora vamos lá… Uma das coisas que eu estava ansiosa no drama era o romance entre os protagonistas já que eles são atores que gosto muito. Ambos são novinhos e cada vez mais provam que são atores excelentes. Acontece que no drama achei que pecaram um pouco no romance. Era um romance que começou de repente e não me prendeu tanto assim. Eram dois fofinhos sim, mas não foi nada demais. E pra piorar ainda fizeram a Hwa Goon ser uma personagem tão maravilhosa que eu quase shippei errado. Me peguei desejando que ela fosse protagonista por alguns momentos, confesso. Já falando nisso, vamos voltar pra Han Ga Eun rapidinho. Eu realmente não tenho muito o que falar dela, pra mim, foi uma personagem normal. Único momento que eu fiquei “uaaau Ga Eun, agora sim!” foi no final do drama. E eu prefiro quando aparecem protagonistas marcantes e com atitudes nos sageuks, e esperava bem mais dessa personagem, infelizmente. Hwa Goon era aquela personagem que no começo eu odiava. Pensava “nem vem querer estragar as coisas, nem vem!” mas pouco a pouco me arrependi do que disse, ela era uma mulher incrível, ela tinha um objetivo e ia atrás dele sem se importar se estava agradando a família ou não. Ela lutou contra tudo e contra todos, ela deu tudo de si, desistiu de tudo que poderia ter com sua convicção. Simplesmente, uma personagem maravilhosa. O desenvolvimento do príncipe herdeiro foi bom, mas poderia ter sido melhor. Em questão de atuação, Yoo Seung Ho foi excelente, mas a história do personagem dele foi um pouco lenta e isso resultou na parte do drama que pra mim saiu dos trilhos por um tempo. Adorei o começo e todo aquele desenvolvimento rápido que o fez ser príncipe, rei, um cidadão comum e logo o chefe dos carregadores… De repente parece que a história empacou um pouco e quando eu achava que ia ter alguma treta grande… nada. 🙁 Gostei muito desse personagem, apesar das minhas reclamações. Ele era inteligente, dedicado e se importava demais com o povo, ele sentia empatia, sentia a dor deles e queria corrigir os problemas da sociedade. Ele queria ser um bom rei, queria a felicidade de todos. E entendo toda a cautela para que os planos dessem certo, mas talvez se ele tivesse agido mais rápido, as brigas com Dae Mok e Pyunsoohwe tivessem sido mais intensas… Enquanto isso, eu só gostava mais e mais dos vilões. Mesmo sendo um ser humano desprezível, Dae Mok era, assim como Hwa Goon, muito determinado. E foi dessa forma até o fim, mesmo. Me surpreendi com as cenas dele no último episódio. Atorzão o Heo Jun Ho! Agora falando um pouco sobre o “outro” Lee Sun, ele também me surpreendeu muito, L atuou muito bem, principalmente nos últimos episódios. O personagem tem uma evolução muito grande, já que seu caráter muda completamente ao longo dos episódios. Claro que nem todo mocinho consegue salvar o mundo sozinho. O príncipe herdeiro conta com a ajuda de um sábio professor e seus fiéis amigos e guardas. Eles são parte importante também, principalmente o guarda Lee Chung Woon Shin Hyun Soo, que foi tão corajoso e fiel ao príncipe herdeiro que mereceu minha admiração e elogios. Difícil encontrar companheiros assim. Também quero citar a Mae Chang Lee Chae Young, uma personagem que não teve tanto destaque, mas pra mim, uma das mais importantes. Ela também estava do lado do príncipe herdeiro e foi uma estrategista impressionante. Uma coisa que eu sempre que podia elogiava cenários lindos, cenas noturnas e pele linda e sem whitewashing do Yoo Seung Ho brilhando na luz do luar. haha Enfim, no geral Ruler foi um bom drama, mas não dos melhores dramas de época. Poderia ter tido mais ação, mais lutas intensas, mas a história é interessante e acaba nos prendendo para saber o que vai acontecer com os “dois reis” e toda a questão da Pyunsoohwe, mesmo sendo um sageuk um tanto leve e com romance inocente.
